The rise of the grey vote and its implications has been noticed by commentators. This paper looks at political engagement and advocacy by retirement village residents in New South Wales. This has identified that there are Electorates with concentrations of retirement villages, resulting in local Members of Parliament who are more interested in village issues.
Over the past two decades the retirement industry has changed with consolidation by for-profit and not-for-profit operators resulting in larger operators, most of whom are capital city based. Retirement village residents remain local. Residents and operators differ in their advocacy strategies over political issues.
